What Jobs Can You Get Without College?

Even though we support higher education, we also recognize that a college education is not right for everybody. Some people are just not academic types, even though these people have plenty of brains. Others have family responsibilities or a lack of cash that make college impractical right now. For these people, we say use your talents and earn while you learn!

There are still some decent jobs, with career advancement potential, that you can get with a high school diploma, GED, or even if you have not finished high school. You can also see Jobs That Do Not Require A Diploma.

Note: If you have some formal training, your prospects will expand even more. For the purpose of this article, we are assuming you do not have any formal training.

What To Look For In A Job Or Career That Does Not Require A High School Diploma?

If you want to find a good career, but lack all the right certificates and diplomas hanging on your office wall, try to look for a few things.

Some jobs still provide plenty of on the job training. You can enter at a lower level, but get trained so you move into a professional or supervisory position.

Many high school provide career training today. You can graduate high school with a diploma, and a certificate! Even if you do not end up graduating, you may still be able to earn the certificate! You may be able to certify as an auto tech, cosmetologist, certified computer professional, food service cook or chef, machine repair person, etc. If you are still in high school, and do not think you will be attending college right away, consider a career training path.

If you have already left high school, you should be able to qualify for financial aid to attend a technical or trade school in the same way you would qualify if you went to a college or university. This may consist of grants, low interest loans, work study, and scholarships. Schools usually will work with students to put together a package of student aid that will allow them to attend school.

Lots of larger companies will pay for their employees to attend school in the evenings or week-ends.

Can People Really Thrive If They Do Not Finish High School?

Again, it is better to graduate high school. But if you cannot do that, you can follow the example of many others who actually found their career niche while in their high school, or older years, and did not walk down the aisle in a cap and gown. However, your own requirements for success will be the same as they would be for anybody. You have to be willing to work, present a professional image, and probably – start near the bottom.

Food Service - There are millions of food service jobs that do not require diplomas. Starting pay may be close to minimum wage, but managers are often selected out of the pool of workers. Some food service staff, like wait persons in busy and upscale restaurants, may earn more than their college graduate counterpart friends.

Retail - Again, a job in the mall will probably start out with a low wage. However, if you show up on time, let upper management know you are interested in moving up, and dress for success, you may move into their job eventually. When you interview for a job, let the hiring manager know you are interested in advancement.

Office Jobs – If you can get into the mail room of a larger company, that provides money for more education, you can earn while you learn. If college does not interest you, they may still find training in other fields they need. For example, you might consider book keeping, computer repair, etc.

Can you Get a Good Job with a Two Year Degree?

At first, we heard we needed a 4 year degree to get a good job. Then we heard we also needed a master’s degree because the market was so competitive. But now we see that there is a huge demand for some jobs that only require a 2 year degree. Associate degrees, from local, community, or even online colleges, are bound to be much cheaper than 4 year university programs too.

Advantages of 2 Year Degree Programs

Some advantages of 2 year degrees could include the ability to live at home, get flexible schedules, and work at your own pace. For instance, a local community college could be close to home so parents can save on dorm costs. Online classes can make it much easier to balance school with a job. In addition, a two year degree can provide entry into a better job market. College credits can be used later to complete a four year degree later too.

Some Hot 2 Year Degree Programs

Dental Assistants – This profession has been growing, and has been taking over many duties that dentists used to perform. Starting salaries may range around $17 an hour, but experienced dental assistants can earn $35 an hour or more. Most dentists will pay for more training too.

Pharmacy Technicians – Assist a pharmacist in a commercial drug store or hospital. Look to make about $15 an hour to start, but get ready for potential growth. Pharmacy techs can move into supervision, or even use this move as a stepping stone to further education as a pharmacist.

Small Business or Managment Accounting and Bookkeeping – You can earn a very practical 2 year accounting degree which can prepare you for state certification exams. You may specialize in one area, or in a small business, have a broad range of responsibility. This is good entry level education for a job with plenty of room for advancement, or even self employment as a bookkeeper, accountant, or tax preparer.

How Can You Find More 2 Year Degree Programs That Provide Entry into Hot Jobs?

You can look for online degree programs or contact your local community college for more information. You may save time with an online degree search.

Do You Need to Train for a New Job Quickly?

Among the millions of job displaced Americans, people over 50 may have a particularly tough time finding a new job. But younger people are struggling too. These people held jobs all across the economic spectrum from manufacturing and service to finance and engineering. But it is not impossible for most people to retrain, no matter what prior education or work experience they have.

Fast Career Changes

The more you bring to the table, the more options you will have. For the sake of this article, I researched ideas that did not require prior higher level education. I also focused on professions that could be entered within weeks or months.

Fast Retraining Ideas

Bartending – We are unlikely to ever run out of a demand for bartenders. Mixology courses last a few weeks, and teach students how to make hundreds of different drinks. Additional training can also teach bar management. As you might already have guessed, take home pay will vary by location and establishment. But I have known bartenders who took home more pay than their accountants did!

Certified Nurse Assistant - A six to twelve week class can get you in the door here. While this is not the most glamorous job at the hospital or other health care center, it is very vital. And a CNA certificate can be a stepping stone towards other medical careers. Once employed at a medical facility, many employers will help pay for RN training. This is a hands on type job that usually deals directly with patients or older people.

Microsoft Certified Office Staff - You can find these classes online, though they are also taught at many high schools and colleges. If you like computers, this may be a quick ticket to an office job.

Insurance Agents – US states do require a license, and applicants must pass a test. But a quick 2 day course is usually enough to enable adults to pass. Prior sales or customer service experience, an attention to details, and an entrepreneurial attitude may be good indicators of success.

Starting salaries or opportunities may not be high, but good agents can enjoy unlimited opportunities.

Software Testing – The demand for professional software testers has bee growing. Companies are realizing that they are better served by removing many of the testing duties from the jobs of the actual developers, and they are moving towards hiring professional testers. Training programs can be completed within weeks to a few months.

Medical Billing and Coding – Training and certification for this high growth job can be completed in a few weeks. Coders are employed in a variety of professional settings from hospitals to doctor’s offices.

Truck Driving – CDL courses can be completed within several weeks. Graduates are qualified for local, regional, or long distance trucking. More and more women are being recruited. There are also good opportunities for husband and wife teams to work together. You do not have to do long haul driving either. Many drivers have local or regional routes and can expect to be home every night.

Car Insurance For Student Drivers Is Seldom Cheap

Most young people have car insurance premiums that are much higher then their parents, of even their siblings who are over 25. This is because the younger people have not driven for a long time, and they have not had time to establish their own driving history. The statistics for the whole class of young drivers are used, and car insurance companies consider younger drivers a reckless and inexperienced lot who are likely to make more claims then people of most other ages, except perhaps the oldest drivers.

We did find some value tips here: Cheaper Car Insurance For Teenagers

That basic idea is that good students, with a B average or above, can find discounts with some insurance companies. Beyond that, a driver’s education or driver safety class can save 10 to 20 percent. Other discounts, which help any driver save money on car insurance, like home and car discounts, safer cars to insurance, safety features, and anti-theft devices can all add up to a substantial price break.

And last, but not least, do some shopping. A ten percent discount with one company, compared to a twenty percent discount for the same action with another company, can really add up over a year’s time. It takes a long time to give a company all the factors that go into car insurance. These include driving history, age, zip code, average mileage, type of car, safety features, anti-theft devices, and even a credit ranking. It will take a really long time to give all of this information to multiple companies or car insurance agents!

Do You Fund Your IRA or Your Kid’s 529 Plan?

Lots of us have the same delimna. Should we save for college or a retirement plan. We have a limited amount of money that we can sock away, and of course, in an idea world we would save for both retirement and the kid’s college. But we know that we can only meet our goals by concentrating on one thing. So what should we do?

Jean Chatsky is an editor of More Magazine, and she says that retirement should come first. Is she telling us to be selfish? Maybe not. College loans, scholarships, grants, and work study programs exist for college. These programs are not available for retirement. She says to sit down with your kids and ask them if they would like to take some of the responsibility for their education, or if they would like to support you during retirement because you spent all of your money on them!

Also, people tend to value things more when they pay for them. If you child takes on some of the responsibility for finding college funding, either through filling out financial aid forms or using money from their own jobs, they will probably apply themselves more in school!

Now, neither of us are saying that you should not give your kids any money. Grades are important, and you want them to worry more about reaching for a high GPA then making minimum wage at Burger Barn. If you have a good retirement savings plan, then you can probably help them out during college years without sacrificing your golden years. Just use some common sense.

college saving, retirement saving, college vs retirement

Do You Think You Cannot Afford College?

Many high school students are good students but believe that college is just beyond their needs. It is true that college costs have been rising twice as fast as inflation, and nobody thinks that a degree is cheap. However, we find that determined students, and their families, find ways to pay for tuition, fees, books, and living expenses.

Cheaper College Alternatives

Many students are choosing to begin their studies at a local community college so they can live at home, work at a part time job, and hold down tuition costs. It really doesn’t matter where you begin your degree to most employers and graduate schools, but only where you graduate from. So it would hardly hurt a student to finish their core classes at home.

Other students even finish some college credit before they leave high school. They take advanced placement courses in high school, and then take approved advanced placement tests which most colleges will accept for credit. Now, this plan isn’t right for everbody, but if you, or your child, can handle the extra load, you can save a lot of money by earning college credit through high school! Many students already have a semester or more of college credit by the time they pick up their high school diploma!

Financial Aid

Financial aid comes in many forms — college grants and scholarships, which you don’t have to repay, and loans, which you do have to repay. There is need-based aid for students who come from lower income families, and merit-based aid for students who excel in athletics, drama, debate, instrumental music, community service, and many other areas. Sometimes financial aid is awarded for students who come from certain geographic areas and other novel reasons. Be sure and explore all of you alternatives before you just decide you cannot afford to go to college!
